Description
As old as agriculture itself, the humble sunflower is a robust and effective addition to your organic companion plant strategy. Its resistance keeps pests away from your plants and protects your crops. A good companion plant for all those who want to reduce pests naturally.
Sunflower is one of the most robust companion plants.
Its advantage comes from its woody and fibrous resistance. It will attract insects hungry for sap and cellulose away from your precious babies with its beautiful appearance. The small and prolific self-pollinating male and female flowers, in their familiar spiral arrangement, will eventually form the much-appreciated sunflower seed. Interestingly, “sunflower” is not really a single flower, but a combination of small flowers that have an attractive collar of insect attracting petals.
Originally from North America, sunflower seems to have been domesticated before corn, more than four thousand years ago. It makes a beautiful addition to any garden and has enormous benefits for your plants- it attracts the eye with its bright colors and protects against pests. If you like organic and natural cultivation, or simply want to increase your defenses, sunflower is a perfect choice.
When the first real leaves appear (the second pair of leaves), thin the rows about 60cm apart. Sow a new row every 2 to 3 weeks to enjoy continuous flowering until the first frosts.
