Plants take up CO2 from the aerial parts which will provide them with carbon and oxygen (essentially through the leaves, except for a few xerophytes* such as cacti, euphorbiaceae or gas exchanges through the stem).

From these 2 molecules and with light energy, the plant makes its own “food” during a process called photosynthesis.
